The article describes from an EU perspective necessary elements for a substantial increase of the modal share of rail freight. EU-enlargement as well as further integration of the EU member states will lead to further increase of transport demand. A large share of this demand has to be taken over by the railways. In addition to the own activities by the railways regarding quality and an international business perspective the article describes reasons for an under proportional participation of rail in transport market growth in the past. Conclusionsandrecommendationsforpoliticsand railways are drawn out of this.
