Given that Zimbabwe's tobacco growers are going through a difficult period, the question arises as to how they will cope with producing next season a quality crop of 200m kg - the target set in June. The recommended crop production level of 200m kg from 83,500 ha is not an unreasonable target for next season. Statistically, it is most unlikely that such wet conditions as were experienced in 1998 and 1999 will recur, and past performances indicate that a national yield of 2,500 kg per ha can be achieved while maintaining quality and the traditional spread of styles.
