People smoke cigarettes in different ways. Human smoking is affected by many factors such as the cigarette being smoked, the individual smoker's experience and so on. It is generally agreed that there is a wide range of human smoking behaviours. Machine smoking, which provides the tar and nicotine values printed on the pack, utilises a standard method of smoking such as the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) or ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) method. The standard methods used in machine smoking do not attempt to replicate humans and are standard experimental conditions that can be replicated with varying degrees of success in different laboratories at different times. The usefulness of such machine smoking has been questioned informally and formally on the basis that humans do not behave in the same manner as machines when smoking. Today machine smoking has been questioned as to whether it faithfully represents the mechanisms used by human smokers, is it merely a mechanism of applying a standard repeatable smoking method to a cigarette? Considerable interest has re-emerged in the mimicking of human smoking patterns, in part this interest has been generated by the current review of ISO standard smoking methods, in part when investigating the correlation of smoke constituent uptake in epidemiological studies with the raw generation of such smoke constituents.
