The RUM-139A Vertical Launch ASROC (VLA, or VL-ASROC) is an anti-submarine missile using a Mk 46 torpedo as its payload. It was developed beginning in 1982 to replace the earlier RUR-5A ASROC on ships using the Mk 41 Vertical Launch System instead of above-deck box launchers. The RUM-139A VL-ASROC is a new design, offering greater range and accuracy than the earlier RUR-5A ASROC. The program was threatened with cancellation on several occasions due to the Navy's desire to standardize its stand-off anti-submarine weapons in a single missile, the UUM-125 Sea Lance. However, with the cancellation of the Sea Lance in 1990, the VL-ASROC has proceeded in order to provide VLS-equipped ships with an all-weather anti-submarine capability to supplement their torpedo-carrying ASW helicopters. Initial full-scale production began in 1993, and Japan was the first (and only) export customer for the system. Lockheed martin has independently funded an extended range version (VLA-ER) which allows it to engage submarines at stand-off ranges of about 35 miles.
