Japan has an active UAV development effort, but the program has remained in the shadows for many years since Japanese firms are not able to export military UAVs due to constitutional restrictions. The J/AQM-1 (also known as Model 820) is a turbojet-powered expendable air-launched target drone developed and built by Fuji Heavy Industries for the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) under a contract from the Japanese Defense Agency. Deliveries of the system began in late 1988. A surveillance/reconnaissance version of the drone is under development for the Japanese Air Self-De-fense Force. Prototypes were completed in 1993, and production was scheduled to begin in 1999.
