Agni

Agni (Fire) is an intermediate range ballistic missile developed by India as part of its Integrated Guided Missile Development Program. Development of the missile began in 1979. The Agni missile was first test on 22 May 1989. An improved version, designated the Agni 2, was test launched on 11 April 1999 and 17 January 2001. In September 2000, the defense minister indicated that Agni 2 had been accepted for service and would enter series production. India began testing a shorter range version of the Agni, variously dubbed Agni-SR and Agni 1 A, and a successful launch in 2004 led to acceptance for serial production. Indian accounts suggest that 8-16 Agni 1 and 18-36 Agni 2 missiles had been deployed by early 2007.
