Agni

Agni (Fire) is an intermediate range ballistic missile developed by India as part of its Integrated Guided Missile Development Program. De-velopment of the missile began in 1979. The Agni missile was first test on 22 May 1989. An improved ver-sion, designated the Agni 2, was test launched on 11 April 1999 and 17 January 2001. In September 2000, the defense minister indicated that Agni 2 had been accepted for service and would enter series production. India began testing a shorter range version of the Agni, variously dubbed Agni SR and Agni 1A, and a successful launch in 2004 led to acceptance for serial pro-duction. Indian accounts suggest that 8-16 Agni 1 and 18-36 Agni 2 mis-siles had been deployed by early 2007.
