The Mexican leather industry is concentrated in terms of location and production. It is mainly focused in the states of Guanajuato, Jalisco, the area encompassed by Mexico City and the surrounding Valley of Mexico. The leather industry as a whole employs no less than half a million people and is therefore a significant contributor to the economy. According to figures released by the National Council of Chambers of Suppliers and Producers of Leather, Footwear and Leather Goods (Concalzado), the sector comprises 62% micro businesses with 1-10 employees, 22% small enterprises with 11-50, 10% medium with 51-250 and 6% large with over 250.
