Citing Jump in Domain Name Disputes, WIPO Warns of Threat From 'Tasting'

The number of Internet domain name disputes brought to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for resolution increased sharply in 2007, a result of thecontinued growth in domain name registrations overall, as well as a worrisome increase in some questionable practices such as domain name "tasting", WIPO said March 27.rnWIPO Deputy Director-General Francis Gurry noted that a record 2,156 domain name disputes were brought to WIPO's Arbitration and Mediation Center for resolution in 2007, an 18 percent increase over the number of disputes brought in 2006 and a 48 percent increase over the 2005 numbers.rnOf those disputes brought to WIPO for resolution, a quarter of them were settled before an arbitration panel decision was issued. Of the remainder, 85 percent of the decisions resulted in the domain name being transferred to the complainant, while 15 percent of the complaints were rejected.
