ICC Says Counterfeiting to Cost Global Economy US$1.7 Trillion Annually by 2015

PARIS-By 2015 counterfeiting and piracy will cost the global economy an annual US$1.7 trillion and threaten some 2.5 million "legitimate" jobs each year, according to estimates released on February 2 by the International Chamber of Commerce, the Paris-based business lobby. ICC Secretary General Jean-Guy Carrier summarized the estimates in releasing an ICC report, "Estimating the Global Economic and Social Impacts of Counterfeiting and Piracy", on the opening day of the Sixth Global Congress on Combating Counterfeiting and Piracy. The French Government is hosting the February 2-3 congress. Organizers said some 900 delegates from intergovern mental organizations, national governments, enforce ment agencies and businesses from over 100 countries are attending the event, which is chaired by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and co sponsored by ICC, the World Customs Organization, IN TERPOL and the International Trademark Association (INTA).
