Besides killing millions of people worldwide each year, poor air quality exacts a huge economic toll, with developing countries hardest hit, the World Bank said in a report released yesterday. In 2013, exposure to indoor and outdoor air pollution cost the global economy an estimated $5.1 trillion, with the losses amounting to as much as 7.5 percent of gross domestic product in some parts of Asia, said the report. That dollar figure is roughly equal to the total output of India, Canada and Mexico combined and offers "a sobering wake-up call," the authors wrote.
