Taiwan Rejects Trademark Registration of Popular Surname by Designer Jason Wu

Taiwanese American fashion designer Jason Wu's appeal against the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office ("TIPO"), which in 2012 ruled against the registration of his "Miss Wu" brand of clothing, was recently denied by Taiwan's Intellectual Property Court, which said the brand could not be trademark-protected because "Wu" is a popular surname in Taiwan. New York-based Wu, who also designed gowns worn by the US First Lady Michelle Obama, filed an application to register the "MISS WU" mark in March 2011 with TIPO.
