CJEU Strikes Down Dutch Law Allowing Illegal Downloading Via Private Copy Tax

Dutch copyright laws that allow illegal downloading of movies or music but compensate copyright holders for the loss via a private copy tax assessed on the sale of equipment such as mobile phones, MP3 players, tablets and video recorders is not compatible with EU copyright law, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled.
