India's intellectual property regulator May 31 published guidelines for companies seeking well-known status for their trademarks. The guidelines specify that applications must be made online, and the documents that must be submitted. This is expected to reduce litigation involving internationally well-known marks not registered in India, many of whose owners are embroiled in trademark infringement and passing off suits. Previously, only courts could declare that a mark was well-known.
