Reader Recalls His Marine High School Days

I was encouraged to read the article in the July 2008 issue on maritime-themed high schools ("School Days"). With the surge of 18 schools coming into fruition in the last eight years, it made me think back to my high school days.rnI graduated from Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass., which was designated as a Naval Honor School in 1941 by the U.S. Navy. As a high school student, the curriculum that Tabor offered - through oceanography and nautical science classes, and the hands-on aspect of sail training and day-to-day operations and maintenance aboard the sailing school vessel Tabor Boy built in 1914 - had a huge impact on my life. Being aboard a 110' schooner with 20 schoolmates and Capt. James Geil provided lifelong lessons in teamwork and leadership that most kids my age would never experience in a lifetime.
