To some observers, the large molten-sulphur cargo vessels that were sitting at a Maine dock several years ago were simply big expensive ships idled by market forces. But Todd Hornbeck didn't see it that way. Instead, the CEO of Hornbeck Offshore Services viewed the two 381-footers as vessels of opportunity for the South Louisiana-based offshore service vessel company. The company converted them into the largest supply boats in the world. The boats became the first multipurpose vessels ever inspected and certified by the U.S. Coast Guard to operate under four different subchapters - I (cargo), L (OSV), D (tank vessel), and O (regulated liquid cargos).
