In December 2008,I received a phone call from Afghanistan asking if I would consider helping the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) with an extensive training programme to educate Afghan herdsmen in cashmere awareness, harvesting and selection. This was part of a USAID project to encourage countryside regions to explore other agricultural activities as an alternative to growing poppies and would involve several visits to the country totalling three to four months throughout 2009.
