Hemp is grown from the sativa strain of the Cannabis genus, which contains minute amounts of the psychoactive substance THC. A bast fibre plant like nettles, flax and jute hemp contains a naturally occurring textile fibre inside the outer bark to give the stem strength and flexibility. The fibres are soft, long and strong Sown from seed in springtime, hemp is one of the fastest growing biomasses, reaching three metres tall in four months. The plant does not require any herbicides or pesticides to thrive.
