According to the recent Powell Review, current prices per kilo for Australian ultrafine and superfine Merino are not high enough to make the industry viable. Helen Cathles, president of the Australian Superfine Woolgrowers Association (ASWGA), believes more needs to be done to educate retailers and consumers alike about the natural benefits of superfine fibre, which more than justify a higher price tag. Many cities in China boast a greater population in a single city than we have in the whole of Australia. Across our vast continent there is only a population of around 22 million. Australia is an ancient land with variable rainfall and soil types, ranging from tropical rainforests to desserts. Therefore, land use is highly specialised in distinct geographic areas. There is a very limited area suitable to grow superfine Merino. It requires a high rainfall temperate zone often found in the highland regions, with a consistent plain of nutrition to grow a fine, even wool staple.
