In the collective imagination the textile and garment production sectors are often perceived as old, traditional and not so innovative. But the reality today is very different, and these industries are undergoing a revolution driven by research and development to adapt to new realities and the changing desires of final consumers. Biella, the Italian wool textile industry cluster, is an excellent example of this new reality. In addition to the work being done by the wool mills and other textile producers here, innovation is being sparked by Citta Studi, a university and training centre established in 1985 thanks to the joint efforts of private and public bodies. Since then, the centre has evolved into an innovation hub where education, training, research and funding for textile companies are the main drivers to reach a clear aim: help the textile production chain improve its performance in order to tackle the global challenges.
