Shipmaster and Historian Edward Carus

Capt. Edward Carus was scarcely 14 years old in 1874 when he shipped aboard the 197' side-wheel steamer ALPENA as a porter on the run across Lake Michigan from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Ludington, Michigan. This launched his career on the Great Lakes, which spanned 55 years and eventually led to the command of passenger steamers of the Goodrich Transportation Company fleet. During this period, Carus witnessed the epic transition from stalwart gaff-rigged schooners to great steam-driven ships (see WB Nos. 208 and 220).
