Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting Beaufort's North Carolina Maritime Museum during its 43rd annual Wooden Boat Show—the longest-running boat show in the Southeast. This year, the 10th annual Beaufort National Boatbuilding Challenge, where 12'Carolina Bateau skiffs are built within a four-hour time limit by teams of two people each, was held concurrently with the main event. There was a festival-like atmosphere over the entire Beaufort waterfront from the boatbuilding competition area to the nearby closed section of street where the Wooden Boat Show took place. Free admission to everything meant that people could wander among the many wooden boats on display, tour the Watercraft Center building and museum, and easily pop over to the boatbuilding competition to catch the best parts of the action.
