Two destinations, both alike in name. One is a storied island-city and merchant port turned tourist mecca, the other is a 40-story monument to chance built to lure Chinese whales across the Macao border. One merits an entire Unesco office, the other is a line item in annual reports for a multibillion-dollar multinational. Despite their differences, Venice and the Venetian Macao hotel share more than just nomenclature and Italianate facades-both are organisms that have been bred for tourism, inhaling electricity, water, and money while expelling garbage, CO_2, and financially depleted people.
