Housing and Growth Series OVERVIEW and CONCLUSIONS

During the past nine months, Western City magazine conducted a comprehensive forum on housing and growth issues. The series was launched in April with an article describing in detail cities' perspective on the challenges they face associated with housing and growth, including: 1. The state's projections for population increases; 2. The fiscal problems associated with providing infrastructure and services; 3. The difficulty of balancing competing needs to preserve the environment, natural resources, agricultural lands and open space with maintaining local quality of life; 1. The proliferation of local ballot initiatives and resident concerns over the impacts of growth; 2. Inadequate state and federal resources committed to affordable housing; and 3. The uncoordinated and conflicting dictates of various state and federal agencies. In short, as cities we told our side of the story. Then we invited key legislators and interest groups to present their perspectives and offer ideas or game plans to address these issues.
