Ken Rancourt is the director of summit operations at the Mount Washington Observatory in New Hampshire's White Mountains. Located on top of the highest peak in the Northeast United States, the Observatory is a private, nonprofit, scientific and educational institution that studies climate and weather by maintaining a mountaintop weather station, conducting research and educational programs, and interpreting the heritage of the Mount Washington region. Having made the commute to the 6,288-foot summit of Mount Washington at least 1,200 times over the past 28 years, Rancourt has a unique perspective on the workaday world to offer to those of us who spend most of our days working at sea level.
