On February 27 and 28,a cold and powerful vortex in the middle atmosphere dove out of the northern Plains and into the Deep South. This spinning pocket of cold energized a frontal boundary draped across Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina, consolidating this zone into a wave of low pressure. The low then tracked up the Eastern Seaboard, drawing energy from the contrasting masses of chilly Canadian air trapped against the Appalachians and Atlantic waters warmed by the Gulf Stream. The low intensified into a classic winter season Nor'easter, a.k.a.,The Snowmaker.This was the big storm that many East Coast snow enthusiasts-frustrated by the long winter's "snow drought"-eagerly awaited. And it arrived in the nick of rntime, just before spring's flowers began to blossom.
