Cape Verde 'Cane

Thus far the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season has unfolded as expected: While a typical number of storms has developed (eight as of mid-September), several have been stunted early and dissipated by wind shear. Strong wind shear-the difference in wind speed and direction with altitude-is a hallmark "telecon-nection"of a strong El Nino across the tropical Atlantic. Early season Atlantic hurricanes often develop close to North America, including the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. Later on, a long tract of open ocean, called the Main Development Region, heats up under the strong summer sun, and storms incubate further east, closer to Africa. Many of these blowups occur once storms pass the volcanic Cape Verde Islands; accordingly, late-season tropical cyclones are often termed "Cape Verde Storms."
