An ancient town mentioned in the Domesday Book, Skipton exudes character and charm from every pore. Visit when the market is in full swing (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays) to see the town at its vibrant best. I he premier attraction is, of course, Skipton Castle, an 11th century fortification located beside the Springs Branch; it is open daily (01756 792442, www.skiptoncastlc.co.uk). Also worth a visit is the Craven Museum & Gallery housed in the Town Hall (closed Tuesdays and Sundays, 01756 706407, www.cravciimusciim.org). Shopping is a pleasurable experience here - there are so many splendid little bakers, delicatessens and greengrocers, many tucked away down tiny alleyways or in quiet courtyards.
