MERSEY FERRY ROYAL IRIS ATTRACTS CAMPAIGN

The precarious state of the former Mersey ferry Royal Iris, derelict, on the mud and taking in water at its mooring in Woolwich, London, has attracted a campaign to prevent it from deteriorating further. The Royal Iris was built in Scotland in 1950 and spend its entire life as one of the legendary 'Ferry 'cross the Mersey' ships until being taken out of service in 1985. It was sold in 1991 for conversion to a nightclub and conference centre. However, various schemes came to naught, and the vessel was towed to London in 2002, where it has been lying since, more recently on the mud.
