There is no city in the world to rival Birmingham for canal heritage. With 100 miles of navigable water, plus link routes like the Stourbridge Canal, you could literally get lost in the Birmingham Canal Navigations. Universally known as the BCN, it has a strong, even fanatical, band of devotees convinced that this is "real boating": that you haven't done the canals until you've toured this dense network. We wouldn't seek to make such a judgement, but you don't have to be a fanatic to enjoy the BCN. It appeals to anyone with an interest in history or architecture, or just plain curiosity about the industries that built our canal system. How tough is BCN boating? Not as bad as you might think. The steerer's instinct in the 1990s was to look behind when emerging from every bridge, lest a hostile local was preparing a volley of stones from above. Those days are long gone, and you're unlikely to encounter trouble beyond overly curious teenagers.
