For hundreds of years, possibly since Roman times, the River Thames is said to have run straight through the middle of Maidenhead. It's why the centre is where it is, rather than half a mile east by the present course of the river. Boats are thought to have serviced the town well into Victorian times and the last one ventured there around a century ago, long after the main line of the river had been diverted to follow its current course.
