Battery specialist Aceleron has designed a new type of lithium ion phosphate (LiFePO4) battery as a 'drop-in replacement' for traditional lead acid, AGM or gel units. The new battery, called Essential, holds 100Ah, has very fast charging (only two hours), provides protection against overcharging, has a very low self-discharge rate (less than 3% a month), and can be run flat without damage. It can also fast-discharge for heavy current drain (such as the induction hob opposite). Other benefits include up to 5,000 discharge cycles and a ten-year warranty, although Aceleron estimates a 20-year life.
