In 2021, the government is banning the commercial sale of 'wet logs' (those with a moisture content above 20%). This won't stop boaters from foraging along rural towpaths and burning their own firewood. But it highlights an essential point of wood-burning: that it generates unhealthy microparticles (the so-called PM2.5). A government study in 2016 estimated that in the UK 36% of such microparticles come from domestic stoves.
