In the spring of 2000 I came across a sign at Fenny Stratford Lock announcing the Bedford & Milton Keynes Waterway, "Target opening 2010". Even though I was a comparative newcomer to the waterways, I saw this as optimistic, and I knew the sign was potentially historic - either because its confidence would be borne out or it wouldn't. Time is a hostage to fortune. I wanted to photograph it but I didn't have my camera with me. Then a friend reminded me that I had an old disposable film camera in a kitchen drawer on my boat, which turned out to do the job. I've used this photo a couple of times, and it remains an interesting historical curio.
