WATER MARKETS - LET THE WATER BEGIN TO FLOW

The market economy and free trade are the basis of Australia's economic prosperity. Yet to promote markets in water in Australia, particularly markets that would allow water trading between the agricultural sector and our growing cities, is a concept that is yet to be warmly embraced. The facilitation of water trading 'between and within the urban and rural sectors' is specifically mentioned in the National Water Initiative and it will be interesting to observe how the Commonwealth and the States work together to ensure that this outcome is achieved.
