The water industry has entered an era where vast amounts of data are being produced from numerous sensors monitoring the network. This ‘big data’ provides potential for far greater integration between operations, engineering and management. This data, if accessed, configured and analysed in real time will allow utilities, councils and supporting consulting companies create new operational insights in real time. Using this additional information with proactive system management can enable the discovery and solution of the complex challenges confronting the industry with a degree of execution and response that has previously been out of reach. The paper will discuss a step-by-step approach for operational analytics grounded in the discussion of successful case studies.
