Compared with the overblown populations of some of Latin America's megacities, the Chilean capital is modestly sized, with only around five million people. Having a demand for water infrastructure which can be satisfied, Santiago is on the way to becoming the sub-continent's first city with full wastewater treatment, with discharges of a quality rivalling those of the world's richest cities.
