Tunnelled sewer brings relief for Vienna

Vienna's sewage system is one of the oldest in the world, with some parts dating back to Roman times. The city centre had a complete sewer system as long ago as 1739. A growing population and technological innovations meant the sewer network and waste-water disposal facilities had to be expanded and modernised time and again to comply with the latest requirements. From the 1950s onwards Vienna built high-capacity wastewater treatment plants, and in 1980 its main wastewater treatment works, in Simmering, was put into operation. Since then all of Vienna's wastewater has been treated and purified before beingrndischarged into the Danube river.
