The desalination market is also increasingly one of specialization, with a good example being GE. Global product manager, desalination, Erik Hanson, explains that 'the global water market is quite large and quite segmented, and there is a lot of competitive focus on one or other niche. We focus on hard-to-treat waters -desalination, water reuse, any water that poses challenges that not all competitors are able to meet.' The company is working on two of the big goals of desal research: improving energy efficiency and water recovery, he explains. Although the group is still experiencing significant success with large contracts, it is focusing its efforts on small to medium size desal. Mr Hanson notes that the larger projects 'are gravitating towards EPCs (engineering, procurement and construction contracts) with water that is not what we'd call hard to treat.'
