Hydroinformatics is an interdisciplinary field, devoted to the application of information technology in the widest sense to solve water and environmental problems. It is a relatively new but well developed field that has emerged in the last 25 years and has made rapid progress. Hydroinformatic techniques are being applied to a range of problems, including, but not limited to, flood forecasting, water quality modelling and water distribution system design and operation. Given the breadth of these applications, this article provides a brief overview of a few of the recent key advances in one area: urban flood management.
