In an era of extreme concern about energy costs, the advance of a sludge treatment process that depends on raising the raw material to a temperature of 165℃ and holding it there for 30 minutes might seem unrealistic. But, since the late 1990s, the thermal hydrolysis process (THP), applied as a pre-treatment to anaerobic digestion, has enjoyed increasing popularity in some European countries, most specifically in the UK and parts of Scandinavia, and looks set for an expanded presence in other parts of the world.
