Modelling of wastewater treatment systems, originally developednby academics primarily motivated by their researchninterest, has become a standard engineering tool. Initiallynfocussed on the activated sludge process, modelling isnnow routinely applied for the whole wastewater treatmentnplant, including sludge and sidestream treatment. Theninterest in process modelling, as measured by the numbernof publications (Figure 1), seemed to have reached anplateau in the early years of the millennium (Gujer 2006),nbut since then it has gained speed again. The number ofncitations has been exponentially growing for the last 25nyears (Figure 2).
