摘要

Increasing pressure on natural resources in Hawaii has Increased the urgency for communities to exploit the ancient Hawaiian ahupua'a model. A form of community self-determination with a cultural bent, ahupua'a resource management promotes community based, sustainable, watershed management by balancing resource rights with responsibilities of caring for the ahupua'a: this involves the notions of "aloha 'aina" (to respect and take responsibility for the land); "malama 'aina" (to care for and nurture the land so it can sustain life for ourselves and future generations); and "pono" (consuming resources in proportion to needs). Moreover, ahupua'a management focuses on public participation, the empowerment of stakeholders, and a holistic, spiritual connection to the earth.
