Life is all about transformation; the changing from one state, form, structure, or appearance to another. Transformation can range from illusory to fundamental. No one ever accused me of being an art critic or in any other way of being an expert on the fine, visual, and performing arts. My aesthetic sense comes from a place best described by Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart when he commented that he couldn't define pornography but "he knew it when he saw it." One of my favorite pieces of public art represents a transformation that is both fundamental and illusory at the same time. Shinge Yamada's "Gift of Water" that stands outside the Hawai'I Convention Center in downtown Honolulu is a heroic bronze sculpture. Bronze is a metal alloy of copper, tin, and sometimes other metals. Pieces of the raw ores bear little resemblance to the crafted metal.
