The Los Angeles River (River) is almost exactly 51 miles long. Its "starting" point is a line in concrete in the San Fernando Valley where two flood control channels merge into one. Its 800+ square mile watershed flows through the nation's second largest urban region, into two of the world's busiest port regions, and into the world's largest water body - the Pacific Ocean. The River literally shaped Los Angeles (LA) with the upper 23 miles entirely in the City of Los Angeles (City) while the lower reaches wind through and between numerous smaller communities.
