摘要

The "great wall of China" is actually a series of interconnected fortifications designed as a barrier against land invasion from the Steppe Peoples of the North, including the Mongols. Though it had some successes, these stationary fortifications were overcome by invading forces over time from the Mongols on. The idea of stationary barriers didn't die with these failures. The concept carried through WWII with the Maginot Line - a series of bunkers, fortifications and systems designed to slow ground incursion into France. German blitzkrieg tactics neutralized this system. Time and again, mobility overcomes static defense.
