The Reed Elsevier Environmental Challenge, an annual competition run by Elsevier's parent company, is awarded to projects that best demonstrate how they can provide sustainable access to safe water where it is presently at risk and/ or access to improved sanitation. The Environmental Challenge projects must have clear practical applicability, address identified need, and advance related issues such as health, education, or human rights. The awards consist of a US$50,000 first prize and a US$25,000 second prize. The Dutch WASH Alliance, a key partner in the competition since 2013, contributes a third prize of US$15,000. The winners of the 2014 Environmental Challenge will be announced in September.
