As EPA Weighs Cr6 Analysis, Industry Renews Push For Weaker Method

As EPA risk assessors weigh their preferred method for assessing the risks of hexavalent chromium (Cr6), the American Chemistry Council (ACC) is urging officials to refrain from using a conservative approach for assessing its cancer risks that will drive strict new drinking water standards and other regulatory requirements. ACC representatives met March 10 with staff from EPA's Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) program, according to a slide presentation, where they touted industry-funded research that shows the substance is not mutagenic, and therefore, under EPA's cancer assessment policy, should not be assessed using a conservative linear method.
