Trump EPA's Proposed Drinking Water Monitoring Rule Focuses On PFAS

The Trump EPA in its final days signed off on a proposed rule to require monitoring of 30 unregulated contaminants in drinking water systems, focusing on 29 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and lithium, but the proposed rule has yet to appear in the Federal Register and is undergoing review by the Biden administration. The proposed fifth unregulated contaminant monitoring rule (UCMR 5) would require all community and non-transient non community water systems serving 3,300 or more people, and a representative sample of smaller water systems, to monitor for the contaminants. This would be the first time that all systems serving 3,300 or more people would be required to monitor following a statutory change in 2018 that lowered the threshold for monitoring.
