The restoration success of seven stream reaches was assessed by a multimetric approach and compared with the methods assessing the ecological status according to the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). The aim was to examine the suitability of the multimetric approach regarding differentiable evaluation, comparable results and usability for long-term-monitoring of restoration success. Evaluation of the ecological status according to the WFD did not reflect the restoration success with required sensitivity. Hence, a solely assessment according to WFD could lead to the conclusion, that restoration measures only have minor or even no positive effects. However, the multimetric approach was more sensitive regarding the overall assessment of restoration success and allowed a differentiable consideration of morphological and biological components, including biodiversity of restored streams and rivers. The multimetric approach differentiates more severely between restored and non-restored reaches and hence, is more suitable for monitoring restoration success than methods according to WFD.
